We stopped over in Singapore for two nights on our way to Fiji from George Town. Using our honeymoon as an excuse to splurge, we booked a room at the Marina Bay Sands hotel. Truthfully, we wanted access to its famed rooftop infinity pool with views of Singapore’s skyline. The Marina Bay Sands reminded me of Las Vegas with a massive luxury shopping mall, a casino, and money oozing off the other guests. Beau and I were quite the scene as we walked into reception with our oversized backpacks and laundry-deprived outfits. I’m not sure I’ve ever felt poorer.
Say ‘Singapore’ and my word association is ‘late night meeting’. Prior to visiting, all of my interactions with Singapore have been work-related. In my mind this foreign place was only reachable by conference call after 5pm. For this reason, I had to make a trip to the office to see my coworkers in the flesh. They treated me to lunch near the office and shared local tips on the best things to do in town. A dose of office time was a healthy reminder I have to work for a living. I’d been getting a little too comfortable in vacation-mode.
While in town we also met up with my friend Sarah of The Wanderblogger. We were both American expats in London and she’s now living in Singapore. We caught up while strolling through Gardens by the Bay and its Cloud Forest Dome. Seeing so much green in the midst of Singapore’s concrete jungle was a breath of fresh air…literally.
Our stopover was short and sweet but it was the perfect dose of reality before going off the grid again. Seeing local friends made Singapore extra special. Onwards to Fiji!
