I have a love/hate relationship with the news. I love to stay up-to-date on current events and educated about happenings in the rest of the world. I hate all the negativity and tragedy that’s inherent in news coverage. But alas, it’s the world we live in and it ain’t always pretty.
Since living outside the US I’ve also learned that news coverage isn’t the same around the world. Every country has a different bias and perspective, understandably. I prefer to stay up to date by listening to NPR’s 7AM News podcast and reading my latest obsession, theSkimm.
theSkimm was started by two twenty-something former NBC producers who saw an opportunity to re-engage a younger audience with world news. So two years ago they quit their day jobs and started compiling a free daily email roundup of the latest happenings, mixing in snippets of their own witty commentary. Here’s an excerpt from today’s email:
They report on all news, good and bad – so while it doesn’t eliminate all the negativity, it does keep me consistently in-the-know. As my aunt so wisely says, “Inquiring minds need to know.” Here’s what they say about themselves: “theSkimm is the daily e-mail newsletter that gives you everything you need to start your day. We do the reading for you – across subject lines and party lines – and break it down with fresh editorial content.”
P.S. This isn’t a sponsored post, I’m not that cool. I just wanted to share one of my new favorite finds. But if 10+ of you happen to sign up for theSkimm at this link, I’ll get some swag to rep them here in London like a boss and you’ll get smarter on current events.
