Summer finally arrived in London just as I capped off my ninth month in this city. June was emotionally more tumultuous than the earlier months have been. Homesickness and doubt repeatedly crept into my thoughts as I struggled to recall what I was thinking when I volunteered to move here. I really hate to admit that sometimes this experience is less than perfect. I prefer you to all think I gallivant around with Kate Middleton and drink high tea with the Beckhams before going to hot yoga with Madonna and meeting up with Hugh Grant for dinner in Notting Hill. But I’m not a liar (sometimes I exaggerate significantly, but no lying).
After overanalyzing my feelings, I’ve concluded the honeymoon phase of London life is simply over. I know my next nine months here will hold more adventure and excitement, but living here is my new normal and I’ve settled into a routine. Just like any relationship post-honeymoon phase, I’ll just need to put in some more thought and effort to keep reminding myself how amazing this London lifestyle is. I’m still grateful to live here and happy with my decision to move, so let’s focus on some June highlights because there were plenty!
I finally ventured out to Kew Gardens with a friend for the day. It’s accessible by tube and so worth a visit. Plan for a full day and pack a picnic because there are several gardens within Kew Gardens to explore. It’s a beautiful setting not far from the center of London.
Along with two friends I rode the train to Brighton for a Sunday outing in mid-June. Photo evidence here.
In my second ever in-person blogger meetup I brunched with the gorgeous Julie behind A Life Exotic. She chose a delicious location for our meet-and-greet, New Tom’s in Notting Hill, where we chatted for hours. Her blog is a wonderful resource for London day trips and another perspective on life as an American in London since she is here for graduate school. Check it out here.
Nice is Nice
I got a nice forehead sunburn while vacationing in Nice, France at the end of June with my friend Shirley. Le blog post for Nice is in the works and I can’t wait to show off photos. The photo below is from a day trip we took to Cannes. I loved the south coast of France and am currently seeking friends with yachts moored in Monaco. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like a new friend.
Let’s bring this post full circle. I started with homesickness, then I had some amazing London day trips and met a new blogger friend. Next I jetted off to the south of France for relaxation and sun. Oh, and I forgot to mention I booked my flights home for Christmas where I’ll stay for two glorious weeks in the land of family, friends, Nordstroms, and Targets. So overall, things are not too shabby here in London. I hope all of you are healthy, happy, and enjoying the summer weather wherever you are. My goal for July is to keep myself busy and focused on the positives. Onto month ten!
